Museum of Arts & Culture
A cultural asset for the whole community
The MAC provides a professional, on-site museum experience for NRHS students. All exhibits are open to the public and free.
Located in the Arts wing of NRHS, the Museum of Arts & Culture (MAC) provides students with an authentic experience of museum gallery installation and display. The MAC's annual exhibits — whether student-led collaborations or shows by established artists — invite interactive activities and discussion on art, literature, history, science, and technology.
Exhibits range from AP art student shows to traveling exhibits, with an emphasis on alumni artists. Interdisciplinary exhibits are celebrated at the MAC, such as The History of Hispanic Migration in New Rochelle and The Amazing History of Forensic Science and Honoring Women Who Inspire. The Fund pays a part-time director an annual stipend.
The Museum of Arts & Culture also collaborates with other museums, cultural institutions, and community groups to reach beyond its walls and serve as an educational and cultural resource for the entire City of New Rochelle.
Past shows at the MAC include:
A History of Opportunity, Service, & Success: Latino Migration to New Rochelle: This exhibit of student work, presented with the help of the Social Studies department, traces and celebrates the Latino migration to New Rochelle. It featured live music and student performances, and members of the Hispanic Culture Club and the United Cultures Club discussing the importance of this exhibit to the community.
Anne Frank: A History for Today: An international traveling exhibit in English and Spanish, conveyed her famous story in the time of the Holocaust and WWII, including photographs of her childhood in Frankfurt and Amsterdam, the rise of the Nazis, the persecution of the Jews and society's response.
The Zocalo at Atlixco, Puebla, documentary photographs by Mary Teresa Giancoli
Ragtime in New Rochelle included a free public lecture by the acclaimed New Rochelle author, E.L. Doctorow. His famous book, "Ragtime," was the exhibit's focus, featuring items from Doctorow's personal collection, readings, and guest speakers.
Soles of the Movement: Artist Chris Burns illustrates the growth of the civil rights movement in America, using historical music, photographs, film footage and memorabilia — particularly shoes. The exhibit commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
